Is Your Sales Manager Getting the Better of You?

Are you new to sales? Are you facing a hovering manager who questions your daily actions? Could it be that you are NOT being judged and the pressure you feel is from lack of knowledge in the field? It takes time to build up confidence when doing ANYTHING for the first time. This is a sign of growth. Sales is uncomfortable at first.


UNDERSTAND THEIR INTENT


Determine if you are dealing with someone who does NOT want you to succeed from someone who does. Many sales managers hover because they feel under pressure themselves. Some genuinely want to support you and are unaware that they are being intrusive.


BE PROACTIVE


Communicate early. State that you appreciate them, while politely putting your own boundaries in place. Say, "I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I'm doing so far. Do you recommend anything I should focus on?" When it comes to boundaries, you can say, "I work best when I have a bit of space. Would it be okay to check in with you at specific times?"


DOCUMENT YOUR WORK


Sales managers hover less when they see you taking initiative. You do so when you ask questions and are willing to learn the industry and company particulars. Sales is all about follow up and follow through. Start internally. Next, document your work by keeping a log of what you are focusing on. This builds credibility quickly. Trust your instinct. What is not documented cannot be proven to be true.


STAY COOL


Just because your sales manager hovers over you, it doesn't mean you are unworthy. Focus on yourself. Learn and improve every single day. Distinguish a great manager from one who secretly wants you to fail by looking out for patterns of behavior. Are they withholding information? Are they setting unrealistic expectations? Sometimes what feels personal is just poor leadership. Trust your instinct if something feels off. Outsmart them by building relationships with other leaders, mentors and peers.
