The Solitary Climb: Navigating the Loneliness of Sales

The loneliness of sales and operating a business can seem daunting. It can feel like an uphill trek that won't end. But it should eventually if you stick with it. You may no longer connect with your current social circle. You now see things differently. Friends and family may not "get it", and frankly they don't have to. Here are some coping strategies in the meantime:


Build Your Business Tribe


Join online communities. LinkedIn or other business groups, as well as local meetups for sales professionals. By engaging in conversations, you can share wins and losses and learn from the feedback you get. You do this until you find your "new" social circle.


Educate Yourself


Take courses, listen to podcasts or read sales books, Learning this way will keep you sharp. Growth will accompany the grind, and that feels good. Focus on the learnings as your push through the unknown.


Create A Daily Ritual


Structure brings sanity. Know your daily plan. You don't just make random cold calls, so why would go on about your day without targeting your goals effectively? Sales requires cold outreach, warm calls, follow-ups, face to face meetings, etc. Know your plan well in advance even with unexpected changes that arise.


Track Progress, Not Just Revenue


Progress (including small wins) builds confidence, even when results take time. The revenue will take care of itself when you work on becoming better. And you become better through time. Repetitive cold calls, follow-ups and meetings will feel smoother, more natural.


Sales involves many highs and lows. Embrace this fact. Stay grounded by focusing on the tasks at hand (regardless of what's happening). This behavior distinguishes those individuals who succeed over the long haul, verses those who quit. New connections can always be built during an isolating period.
