The Power of Effective Sales Follow-Up

Most people outside the B2B space would say, "Cold calling doesn't work." But what if I told you that it works like a charm in multiple industries when done correctly? Follow-up is key because it transforms the cold conversation into a warm one. How many people do you know who warm up to you the very first time? Whether you call them or meet at an event, the connection is new and it is unfamiliar. In sales and business consider the following:
Change your thinking
To out-perform others in sales, change the way you think. What do others hate to do? Cold calling is usually high on the list! What if you made more calls, knowing this? The idea is to turn your cold outreach efforts into warm follow-up conversations. The follow-up makes or breaks your initial prospecting effort.
Test what works
Turn your cold calling and follow-up efforts into a game. Test what happens when you change your script. Test what happens when you leave more or fewer voicemails. Test what happens when you target a new audience. Keep testing and applying what you learn. It'll only make you better in sales. Cold calls and follow-ups will look different from industry to industry. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The more you test, the more you know what works. Gather the data and apply it accordingly.
Balance data with your intuition
Numbers only tell part of the story in sales. Your intuition will tell the rest. If something feels too rigid with a prospect, it probably means you are moving too fast. Go beyond the surface-level to learn more about clients. Reflect on past experiences - What deals "felt" right? What happened on those situations where you ignored your gut and followed-up too late?
When following up with prospects, tune into emotional cues, subtle signs and timing. Sometimes you will need to persist. Other times you will need to back off. Mirror their energy. If they resist, change course. Use silence wisely. A pause can be powerful. Breathing room can be just what's needed to implement next steps.
